Cake @ The Hummingbird Bakery, Richmond

I caught up with my friend C at The Hummingbird Bakery in Richmond, London between one of my trips. C suggested that we go to this café as I had not been before and she wanted to show me their range of cakes. The front of the bakery tempts you with their window display of decorated cupcakes and gives you a taste of what to expect from their range of sweets inside. When we first walked in I was amazed at the range of cakes, cupcakes, muffins and other sweet treats on display. I had a very tough time deciding which one to have as they all looked delicious and there was some interesting flavour combinations. After many ‘ums’ and ‘ahs’ I finally settled on the raspberry cheesecake and chocolate brownie combination as I had never seen the two combined before and could not pass up trying both of them at the same time.

We visited on one of the hottest summer days that London experienced in July. Due to the hot weather I opted not to try their range of teas but instead had a pineapple and mango smoothie, which came pre-packaged. Being pre-packaged this drink was not a reflection of the café per say. It was alright, it quenched my thirst for something cool to drink after being trapped on a bus in the heat, however I would not personally go for this again as I found it to be too sweet and processed for my liking.

The brownie had a nice flavour with moderate richness. I tend to prefer my brownies to be of a more ‘gooey’ texture but with the cheesecake on top of it I can see how that would not have worked. The cheesecake on top of the brownie was not very flavoursome. Overall it was an interesting combination to try but not one that I would go back to as it did not ‘wow’ me and there were plenty of other cakes on display to try out.

There is seating at the back of the café for patrons, which I found to be a little under lit. Though the air-conditioning did the job for giving us relief from the summer hear. I would recommend giving the cakes a try at the Hummingbird Café, however perhaps look into a take away order and wander around the corner to Richmond common to enjoy them out in the outdoors (weather dependant of course!).
